Wigs Lasting a Lifetime

Is this your first time buying a wig? Wondering how long your wig should last?

There are many different types of lace wigs, and durability will depend on three things:

1.     The type of hair quality

2.     The cap or wig foundation

3.     How you take care of the wig

Full Lace, Lace Front, Lace Closure, and Monofilament Wigs are the most natural-looking wigs in the beauty industry. Today, Lace Wigs are 100% hand tied with single or double strands of hair that are constructed into the lace, giving a high illusion of a natural scalp and hairline.

1.     The type of quality hair

Raw Human Hair โ€“ This hair is identified as the most natural-looking and highest quality hair available. This type of hair comes from a single donor and is unprocessed. This hair can be colored, bleached, and permed and can take heat amazingly. This type of hair needs additional styling and care. This hair is pricier but worth the investment because it can last many years when under proper maintenance. Raw Hair duration can last many years with proper care (2 years+).

Virgin Human Hair- This type of hair is almost identical to Raw Human Hair. The difference is virgin hair is cut from multiple donors, chemically processed, and wafted. Virgin hair duration is 6 months to 1 year with proper maintenance

Mix Blend or Human and Synthetic Hair โ€“ This type of hair can keep a style longer than human hair because of the synthetic strands; and, because of this, this type of hair will be more versatile, is ready to wear with minimum styling, and can handle low heat. This hair requires very little maintenance but is less durable than human hair.

Full Synthetic Hair โ€“ This hair strands are artificial, therefore, cannot handle direct heat. However, it requires little to no maintenance and can be worn when received.

2. The cap or wig foundation

ยท        Standard weft cap, capless, ventilated, or open weft cap have wefted extensions sewn on the back and sides of the wig cap with lace at the top. This cap is the most open and weightless type of cap you can get because of the wefts being sewed on the thinnest material of the cap, creating the foundation.  Duration is 1-2 years with proper care (i.e., keeping wig on wig stand and is not subjected to constant brush or manipulation)

Weft or Capless Cap Foundation

ยท        Standard full lace cap is full lace throughout the whole cap. Single strands of hair are ventilated into the lace and is handmade. Duration is 1.5 years with proper care (i.e. keeping wig on wig stand and is not subjected to constant brush or manipulation). Because the hair is ventilated into the lace by hand, the wig will eventually start to thin out with too much manipulation.

Full Lace Cap Foundation

ยท         Classic lace front cap is almost like the standard full lace cap. The difference is that this cap has more durability and only has lace in the front of the cap while having a spandex material in the back that has tracks sewn on it.  Duration is 2-3 years with proper care (i.e. keeping wig on wig stand and is not subjected to constant brush or manipulation).

Classic dome caps (mesh material) can be customized to your head size, is breathable, and has either a frontal (13x6 and 13x4 sizes) or closure (5x5 and 6x6 sizes) that are hand or machine sewn onto the sides and back of the cap. Duration is 2-3 years with proper care (i.e. keeping wig on wig stand and is not subjected to constant brush or manipulation).Classic dome caps (spandex/nylon material) can be customized to your head size, has soft and comfortable material (not as breathable as the mesh designed cap), and has either a frontal (13x6 and 13x4 sizes) or closure (5x5 and 6x6 sizes) that are hand or machine sewed onto the sides and back of the cap. Duration is2-3 years proper care (i.e. keeping wig on wig stand and is not subjected to constant brush or manipulation).

3.How do you take care of the wig?

How you treat your wig is the biggest factor of how long it will last. Just like like your natural hair, if you mistreat it, it will eventually start to shed, break, or fall apart in general. The same goes for wigs, especially if your wig is made of human hair. Human hair wigs required TLC!

  • Place your wig on a mannequin or wig stand every time itโ€™s off your head.

  • Wash the wig frequently (wash wig every week with a conditioner shampoo or just conditioner if it has a lot of product or oil in it or every 2 weeks if it just needs a fresh bounce and shine to it).. Note: if the hair has a lot of different products in it, use a  moisturizing shampoo and conditioner on the hair. This will keep the hair from stripping the hairโ€™s natural oils and dry more quickly after washing.

  • Lace front, lace closure, and full lace wigs that have HD lace are fragile and thin; therefore, they require gentleness when dealing with this type of lace. Otherwise, it can break or get holes. The best way to take care of this type of lace is not to put glue on it. When using, use holding gel or holding spray to hold it down in the front of your head, and spray warm water on it before taking the wig off to stop the lace from breaking.

To sum up, your wig will last be based on the hair type, wig foundation, and how the wig is maintained.
